On 22 November 1940, Spitfire X4593 of 266 Squadron crashed near Holme Lode Farm, Holme. In October 2015 an excavation to recover the remaining wreckage of the plane was undertaken. The crash site now forms the southernpart of the Wildlife Trust Rymes Reedbed and is under restoration to create a wonderful new area for wildlife. The week long excavation was succesful and memorable time for all the partners involved.Led by TheWildlife Trust BCN and Oxford Archeology East and working with an array of specialists including the Defence Archeology group, English Heritage, Cranfield University Forensic Institute and the local community, the story of the Spitfire was uncovered and Harold`s memory honoured.
