The FSC Dragonflies Identification Chart features the adults of 16 damselfly species and 28 dragonfly species: the most common of the 52 species that have been recorded in the British Isles. Beautiful colour paintings are grouped by similarity, with separate images of males and females forms for most species. Sometimes called the 'birdwatcher's insect', dragonflies and damselflies are large and charismatic insects with a distinctive flight pattern. Dragonfly and damselfly identification in the field can initially be daunting, but with practice most British species can be identified when in flight. Accompanying text provides extra background information on life-cycle and feeding.
